The image belongs to the type of iconography of the Virgin of Hodegetria. The word Hodegitria comes from ancient Greek and it's translated as "Our Lady of the Way". The Virgin Mary is depicted holding Child Jesus at her side while pointing to him as the only way of Salvation.
